STEEL FENCE CONSTRUCTION IN CHICAGOLAND
Fences help protect your property, and they can help improve your home’s curb appeal, too. However, there are so many fencing options that finding one that works well for you can take some searching. As you check out the different options, consider steel fencing for better strength that also looks terrific.
Comparing Steel Fences to Other Materials
Fences can be made of one of several materials, from vinyl to wood to metal. Wood looks nice, but is at risk of rotting and attracting pests, not to mention being a fire risk. Aluminum is lightweight, but it’s also easier to bend than steel. Vinyl is great for solid fences, but if you want a fence with space between the pickets for air flow, then you’d want a metal fence for superior durability.
Benefits of Steel Fences
Strength is the main benefit of steel fencing. In fact, steel beats even wrought iron and aluminum for strength, and if you want a fence that doesn’t require as many posts in the ground for support, steel is the way to go.
Another benefit has to do with something called “racking.” When you install a fence on a slope, you have two options. One is to place one panel lower or higher than the one next to it, creating a terraced look as the panels head down or up the slope. The other is to use rackable panels, which have a pivot point where each picket meets the rails. These pivot points allow the pickets to tilt so that they remain upright while the rails conform to the slope. The result is a fence that heads up or down a slope without requiring the entire top rail to look like a set of stairs. Steel is one of the better materials to use when you want a railed fence because the material holds up better. Those pivot points can be weaker than normal, and you need a strong fence material to balance that out.
Steel shares some benefits that other metal fences have, such as being pest-resistant. They aren’t going to burn in a fire, although with enough heat, any metal fence can warp. The steel isn’t susceptible to rot, either. Steel fences are usually coated to prevent rust, although it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on the fence to be sure the coating hasn’t sustained any chips from, say, a severe hailstorm. But other than that and general cleaning (as you would do with any structures in your yard), steel requires very little in the way of maintenance. Once the fence has been installed, you really don’t have to do much to keep it looking good. Steel fence design works well with many styles of housing and commercial construction, too.
Installation of Steel Fences
Installation of steel fencing requires time, and the upfront cost can be more expensive than the cost of installing other materials. However, once installation is done, there’s little you have to do. And with proper care, the fence can last for a very long time, which means you don’t have to deal with as many repairs or replacements as you might have with other materials.
Most residential steel fences are tubular, meaning they’re hollow on the inside. They aren’t necessarily cylindrical. If the fence meets a wall at one end, then during installation, you will have to have brackets bolted to the wall so that the rails of the fence can be secured to the wall. Post bottoms need to be anchored to the ground, and that process can be different for dirt, concrete, and so on.
