Many things droop with age, but your fence doesn’t have to be one of them! In this blog, we expose the 9 most common installation mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Incorrect Measurements
Sloppy measurements can lead to uneven or misaligned fence posts. That’s why it’s important to measure and mark where each post will go carefully and to double-check your measurements before you start digging.
2. Not Checking Local Regulations
Don’t get caught paying the HOA anything more than you have to! Avoid fines by staying in compliance with local rules and regulations. One of the most common mistakes we see people make is ignoring local rules and then paying for it later.
In addition to city ordinances, be sure to review any HOA guidelines for fence installation. If you don’t have an HOA, consider yourself blessed 😉

3. Improper Post Depth
Shallow post holes cause fences to lean, sag, or even topple over (and nobody wants a saggy pole).
Dig post holes to a depth that is about one-third the height of the fence above ground. In areas with frost (i.e. Chicago), digging below the frost line can prevent heaving.
4. Not Accounting for Soil and Terrain
Don’t assume that all posts and panels can be installed evenly, regardless of terrain.
For sloped land, consider using techniques like stepping or racking the fence to maintain a consistent look and secure fit.
5. Ignoring Drainage and Water Damage
Failing to account for runoff can cause wood fences to rot or metal fences to rust. So, rather than having to start all over again a couple of years down the road, use materials made to withstand your local climate and ensure posts are set with proper drainage.

6. Over-Tightening Screws and Nails
For wood fences, fastening hardware too tightly can cause wood to crack, especially as it expands and contracts. That’s why we recommend tightening screws and nails just enough to secure them but leave a little flexibility for natural movement.
7. Incorrect Gate Placement or Installation
Poorly installed gates might sag or drag with time, making them difficult to open or close. To avoid this, use quality hardware and ensure posts around gates are set deep and reinforced. Also, make sure the gate swings freely and has adequate clearance.
8. Not Using Quality Materials
Trying to cut costs by using poor-quality materials can lead to repairs or replacements somewhere down the road. That’s why it’s important to choose materials suitable for your needs and climate. Hardy wood, rust-resistant metal, and high-quality vinyl are all great choices for Chicago homes.
